Biolog

Kikare eller mikroskop är viktiga redskap för en del, medan andra mest använder telefon och dator. Vissa biologer arbetar mest i samarbete med andra människor medan andra har mer av ett ensamjobb.

En biolog kan ägna sig åt allt som lever. Du kan studera livet på cell- och molekylnivå, hela organismer eller hur kroppens funktioner samverkar. Du kan arbeta med släktskap och biologisk mångfald eller studera hela ekosystem. Du kan också välja att inrikta dig mot naturvårdsbiologi, ekologi, biodiversitet och systematik.

Spännvidden inom ämnet "biologi" är väldigt stor. Som biolog kan man bl a arbeta som molekylärbiolog, zoolog, fysiolog, etolog eller ekolog – inom exempelvis läkemedelsforskning, i djurparker, på laboratorier, länsstyrelser, kommuner eller inom djurskydd, naturvård, rättsgenetik etc. Många biologer arbetar också med konsultverksamhet, undervisning, miljöinformation och/eller forskning.

Väljer du biologi med inriktning mot molekyler, celler, organismers och organs funktioner finns jobben ofta inom läkemedels och bioteknikindustrin, med ansvar för bland annat kvalitetstestning, provning och produktutveckling. Väljer du biologi med fokus på miljö- och ekologi kan du jobba som konsult inom miljöområdet, som ekolog, samhällsplanerare, inventerare eller utredare.

Som biolog så kan man arbeta med artbevarande genom att praktiskt undersöka arterna och deras ekologi, vad de behöver för att överleva, samt även vara involverad i inrättandet av exempelvis naturreservat och liknande.

Utbildning

Kandidatexamen, 180 hp eller 3 år, med minst 90 högskolepoäng i ditt huvudämne. Efter kandidatexamen kan du läsa vidare på avancerad nivå. Magisterexamen omfattar sammanlagt 240 hp, ytterligare 60 hp genom ett års heltidsstudier. Masterexamen omfattar sammanlagt 300 hp det vill säga ytterligare 120 hp, två års heltidsstudier.

Att kombinera en utbildning i biologi med kunskaper i exempelvis datavetenskap, juridik, ekonomi eller språk kan öka möjligheterna till anställning. Det är också viktigt att kunna använda sina teoretiska kunskaper för att skapa nya produkter och tjänster. Detta är viktigt bland annat inom life science området som domineras av mindre företag som har stora krav på sig att få ut produkter på marknaden. Det innebär att företagen behöver personal med ett affärsmässigt förhållningssätt. Att vara en skicklig kommunikatör är också en viktig faktor i arbetslivet för många biologer.

En bra grund är att läsa på gymnasiets Naturvetenskapsprogrammet.

Arbetsplats

Oavsett vilken inriktning du väljer finns det en arbetsmarknad inom forskning, utveckling och utbildning. Biologer finns dessutom på laboratorier inom till exempel sjukvården. Många biologer breddar sin utbildning genom att läsa exempelvis kommunikation, marknadsföring, juridik eller ekonomi och jobbar som exempelvis vetenskapsjournalister och miljörevisorer.

Biologer kan också bli egenföretagare och driva konsultfirmor med biologisk inriktning.

The department is primarily tasked with developing new therapies to treat chronic respiratory diseases. This is a consultant assignment, starting in January. 

Responsibilities

As part of the team you will plan, optimise and execute in vitro experiments as well as support analysis from both in vitro and in vivo studies to progress our drug discovery projects and generate publishable scientific insights. You are expected to actively take part in scientific discussion to add valuable input in experiment design, data interpretation to drive projects and techniques.

This is a lab-based role where you will be involved in multiple ongoing projects with responsibility to perform experiments from various cells and tissues for both in vitro-, in vivo- and patient studies. We are looking for someone with broad experience in modern cell biology and molecular analysis techniques that rapidly can become an integrated project member and deliver key data.

Accountabilities:
  • To be an effective team member in supporting drug discovery projects to meet their objectives
  • To conduct where appropriate in parallel more than one area of work to agreed timelines
  • Can contribute to writing peer-reviewed publications, abstracts and patents
  • Responsible for ensuring that their scientific knowledge influences project progression in accordance with portfolio priorities

Qualifications

Essential Requirements
  • A PhD, or MSc with several years practical experience, in a relevant area of Bioscience.
  • Relevant experimental experience in assay development, cell and molecular biology methods, culturing of cells, immunoassays, protein and RNA analysis.
  • Good social and communication skills and to be a strong team player.
  • Candidates should be able to work independently, take own initiatives and have a positive, goal oriented and problem solving attitude.
  • Good organisational skills are required
  • Good English is required, both spoken and in writing.

The following skills are desirable
  • Experience in the isolation, culturing and analysis of primary cell cultures
  • Experience in the use of biological dose response assays
  • Experience in immunological methods (ELISA, MSD), protein analysis (western blot) and RNA analysis (qPCR)
  • Experience in handling and evaluation of pharmacological drug substances

Job description

Direct cigarette smoke exposure to 3D epithelial cell cultures by VC10-S robot
Thesis work: 30 credits, starting in January 2021

Cigarette smoke is the main driver of COPD, the third most common cause of death worldwide. The disease is characterized by destruction of the airways and inflammation. In this project we aim to establish a method for direct exposure of 3D cultures of airway epithelial cells to cigarette smoke by an advanced robotic system.

Responsibilities

In this placement, the student will be part of a cross-functional team within Research and Early Development, Respiratory and Immunology (R&I) department building scientific knowledge around disease-causing mechanisms and identification of novel targets for treatment. Specifically, the student will be working closely with a team with high expertise in epithelial cell cultures.

Objectives and goal
  1. Establish protocol for exposure of epithelial cells to direct cigarette smoke.
  2. Get insight in project work. 
  3. Contribute scientifically to the Bioscience and Target Science teams. 
  4. Acquire experience in machine systems operation as well as molecular and cell biology methods including MSD, ELISA and confocal microscopy.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Genome-sequencing has catalogued somatic genomic alterations in human diseases. However, identification of these mutations does not reveal their functional importance. CRISPR-Cas9 screenings are used to study the function of genes at large scale. During this master thesis, you will be involved in designing and cloning a customized barcoded guide RNA library for CRISPR-Cas screening. Such library will be used for drug resistance screening for oncology applications. During the project you will be exposed to the state of the art molecular biology techniques such as library cloning, cell culture and next generation sequencing.

Projektbeskrivning: Postdoktorn kommer att delta i det EU-sponsrade projektet https://www.bloowater.eu/ som utvärderar metoder och strategier för att göra det möjligt för anläggningar för rening av dricksvatten att bättre hantera konsekvenserna av de allt vanligare cyanobakterierna. Som en del av detta projekt kommer kandidaten att hjälpa till med att utvärdera olika modelleringsmetoder som potentiellt kan användas för att förutsäga sannolikheten för blomning, som i sin tur kan användas för att förbereda för förändringar i vattenreningen. Tre metoder kommer att utvärderas. 1) Användning av processbaserade modeller som förutsäger förekomsten av generiska cyanobakteriegrupper 2) Användning av maskininlärningsalgoritmer matade genom mätningar från tillgängliga sjöövervakningsdata och tränade i observationer av uppmätta fytoplanktonkoncentrationer 3) En hybridstrategi på 1 och 2 som inkluderar biofysiska data (vattentemperatur, blandningshastigheter, ljusnivåer etc.) från processbaserade simuleringar till maskininlärningsalgoritmer.   Modellutveckling och testning kommer att göras med hjälp av data från sjöarna Erken och Mälaren i Sverige och sjöarna Albano och Castreccioni i Italien.  Postdoktorn kommer att arbeta som medlem av en grupp som också består av mastersstudenter och doktorander. Det förväntas att postdoktorn kommer att arbeta för att hjälpa alla medlemmar i gruppen att uppnå gemensamma mål, och att postdoktorn kommer att ta en ledande roll i utvecklingen av studier relaterade till BLOOWATER-projektet. Arbetsuppgifter: - Köra befintlig hydrotermisk och vattenkvalitetsmodell för Erken och utveckla modelluppsättningar för andra sjöar av intresse. - Utveckla bearbetade algoritmer och optimeringsmetoder som förbättrar modellprestanda för att simulera förekomsten av cyanobakterier. - Utveckla och testa maskininlärningsalgoritmer som förutsäger förekomsten av cyanobakterier. Barn- och kvinnocentrum (BKC) är en länsövergripande produktionsenhet inom Region Östergötland (RÖ). Barn- och kvinnocentrum består av fyra kliniker med verksamheter vid RÖ:s samtliga sjukhus samt mindre mottagningar över hela länet. BKC bedriver en omfattande läns- och regionsjukvård. Centrumet har cirka 900 medarbetare med läkare, sjuksköterskor, barnmorskor, undersköterskor, barnsköterskor, vårdadministratörer och socialterapeutisk personal. BKC ger klinisk utbildning till cirka 200 studenter per år, inkluderat specialist - och utbytesstudenter. Kvinnokliniken vid Universitetssjukhuset (US) i Linköping, en del av Barn- och kvinnocentrum, arbetar med alla verksamhetsgrenar tillhörande kvinnosjukvården; alla former av gynekologisk öppen och slutenvård med profilering mot högspecialiserad vård, cancerkirurgi, infertilitetsbehandlingar samt all typ av obstetrik där mödravården är organiserad inom kliniken. Kvinnokliniken i Linköping betjänar patienter i behov av avancerad kvinnosjukvård från hela Sydöstra sjukvårdsregionen, samt för cancerkirurgi även Västmanland. Our group investigates the role of mucins during host defense against bacteria, and the biological function of changes in mucosal mucin expression and glycosylation associated with disease. Job assignments The project aims to structurally characterize salmonid mucins and their glycosylation and how they are regulated during infection as well as how this can be exploited to prevent and treat infections in aquaculture. The planned work includes structural and functional analysis of mucins and their interaction with the salmonid pathogens. Qualifications PhD in a relevant subject. The successful candidate will be selected based on their: i) laboratory skills ii) background and knowledge in a relevant field; iii) oral and written communication skills in English, and iv) analytical skills. What you'll do The role is a core global, the span of responsibilities is broad and may support one or several products depending on their size and complexity. The products supported will be in Phase 3 development or on the market, but the program may include studies in all phases of drug development. The ADCD is responsible for oversight of a program of global studies, covering all clinical development deliverables. The role also involves integrating design, feasibility and operational planning to ensure clinical drug development programs are aligned with priorities and strategy. The ADCD will provide input & support to the Director of Clinical Development (DCD) in preparation for governance interactions. The ADCD may act as the lead for cross-functional teams in delivery of clinical activities assigned. In the role, the ADCD may provide project leadership & management for cross-functional clinical submission teams in support of regulatory marketing applications and post registration product maintenance phases. You may also manage improvement or change projects within clinical operations or spanning multiple business areas. Your main accountabilities/responsibilities: As a ADCD, you will be leading cross functional teams of experts in the planning and delivery of a defined clinical program of studies and/or clinical activities to scope, quality, budget, time; managing resource and risk. You will work closely with individual study leaders to provide appropriate oversight of a program of studies on behalf of DCD. You will also provide clinical operations expertise into the project (e.g. country selection, feasibility, operational input into design, external partner management) to support governance interactions and project start-up. You will lead large or complex deliverables and the process to identify and solve operational issues and drive delivery to plan through internal or external partners. Subject area The position is in biology associated with the molecular biology group Background The biology subject at Örebro University focuses on studies of living organisms, from the molecular level to the interaction between organisms, their living conditions and ecosystems. Within the biology subject, there are research groups linked to the Life Science Center. Biological research linked to the Life Science Center includes molecular biology, physiology, developmental biology and microbiology. The research groups within the Life Science Center constitute a strong and creative research environment with strong national and international collaborations, and involves collaboration with industry.  Duties and responsibilities The appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is intended to enable persons who have recently been awarded their doctoral degree, to consolidate and develop primarily their research/artistic skills. The position focuses on research on the development of molecular biology methods and studies of the relationship between organisms' ability to control physiological functions in response to changes in the environment. The studies will be focused on how gene expression is affected by changes in the environment and how this is linked to the occurrence of indicator species in the environment. The studies require a background in molecular biology and experience in using bioinformatics for gene expression analysis. Eligibility Eligible for the appointment as postdoctoral researcher are applicants holding a doctoral degree in biology or in related subject areas. The doctoral degree should have been awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline.
