Den nya biologins revolution – från DNA till bioteknikens framväxt
Sedan James Watson och Francis Crick avslöjade DNA:s struktur i slutet av 1950-talet har den nya biologin genomgått en enorm utveckling. Tillsammans med upptäckten av PCR-tekniken och avancerade sekvenseringsmetoder på 1980-talet, har forskningen öppnat dörrar till en mängd nya möjligheter inom både medicin och biologi.
Watson och Cricks banbrytande arbete lade grunden för en rad revolutionerande genombrott. Genom att förstå DNA:s struktur fick forskare verktyg att utforska livets byggstenar på ett sätt som tidigare inte varit möjligt. Samtidigt möjliggjorde upptäckten av PCR-tekniken och förbättrade sekvenseringsmetoder under 1980-talet en mer exakt och effektiv analys av genetisk information.
Dessa genombrott har lett till en explosion av ny kunskap som har förändrat hur vi ser på både biologi och medicin, och öppnat upp för utvecklingen av innovativa behandlingar, läkemedel och diagnosmetoder.
Bioteknik, som en del av den nya biologin, kommer att spela en allt viktigare roll i vårt samhälle. Genom forskning och teknologiska framsteg på området kommer nya kunskaper att forma många aspekter av vårt liv – från hälsa och medicin till miljö och jordbruk. Den ökade förståelsen för biologiska processer kommer att ge oss verktyg för att tackla framtidens utmaningar, såsom sjukdomar, klimatförändringar och resursbrist.

... Cyborg - är ett ord som beskriver en "cybernetisk organism", det vill säga en organism som består av såväl biologisk vävnad som syntetiska delar. Termen "cyborg" myntades år 1960 av Manfred Clynes och Nathan Kline i en artikel om möjligheter att använda självreglerande människa-maskin-system vid rymdresor.
Det finns idag ett antal personer med bioniska armar och ben eller med hörselimplantat. Syftet är i första hand att återställa förlorade funktioner och att förbättra människors förmågor. En bionisk arm kan rotera i 360 grader, vilket en naturlig människoarm inte kan göra.

About the role:
The Scientific Support Division at ESS is looking for a Biodeuteration Scientist to support the ESS neutron user program. The Deuteration group at ESS operates a support service providing deuterium-labelled samples for the scientific users of the ESS neutron instruments for carrying out a broad range of experiments primarily in materials and life science research.
In this position, you will play an important role in ensuring the success of biological and biomaterial experiments at ESS by further developing methods for the biological production of a range of deuterated biomolecules, contributing deuterated materials for user proposals and requested by ESS users, and optimising purification and analysis capabilities. In the ESS Deuteration group, we also work in close collaboration with our international colleques at other deuteration laboratories.

About you:
We're seeking an experienced and highly motivated biochemist/biologist with a PhD in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry or biotechnology and a strong track record of the expression of biological molecules in microbial cell cultures for research. You have experience of bacterial and yeast expression systems and biochemical modifications and purification methodologies. In addition to designing biological production processes and optimising purification methods, you also bring deep expertise and understanding of modern cell culturing and analytical techniques - including automated fermentation systems, purification technologies and biophysical characterisation methods. Experience in protein ligation-mediated polypeptide engineering, and/or genetic engineering of microbial expression systems is an advantage.
You take pride in delivering reliable results on time, and you thrive in both independent and collaborative settings. Comfortable working with colleagues and neutron users from many disciplines, you have a service-minded proactive approach and an eagerness to contribute to a fast-paced, international research environment. Communicating clearly in English - both written and spoken - comes naturally to you, and you're confident engaging with colleagues from a wide range of technical backgrounds and presenting your work at conferences.
If you’ve worked with biological deuteration previously, that’s a strong advantage. So is experience operating automated bioreactor systems, experience with higher eukaryotic cell culturing, biomolecule production and purification at mg-g scale, or supporting user-driven custom projects in research, infrastructure or contract environments. You’re someone who wants to contribute to the bigger picture outside your own lab work – both scientifically but also practically by acting as a driver for the development of new capabilities, maintaining high safety standards, caring for shared infrastructure, and keeping instruments in top condition. Gnothis AB is seeking for a hands-on engineer who enjoys building experimental systems in a laboratory environment. The role combines microfluidics integration, instrument prototyping, and Python-based automation. This is a permanent position based at our HQ, located at the campus of Stockholm University (Stockholm, Sweden).
Gnothis, founded in 2015 and supported by highly innovative industrial professionals and technology developers, is on a mission to develop a new frontier for single molecule DNA sequencing; to break the mold on how sequencing is used as a clinical tool for the diagnosis of complex diseases. Gnothis technology integrates a wide range of cutting-edge sciences ranging from nanotechnology, photophysics, optics, surface chemistry, biochemistry and computational science.
Since we have taken significant steps forward and now need to solve the remaining crucial challenges before commercialization; for the right person this is a unique opportunity to become a valuable member, to use your “think-outside-the box” mentality with aim to develop a new world-class technology platform!
Our instrumentation, software and analysis team currently consists of four engineers and we are now expanding the team as we scale development of the system. The work is primarily on-site and very practical, involving both hardware integration and control software development.
The position is part of a multidisciplinary team developing a prototype DNA sequencing instrument combining microscopy, microfluidics, nanofabrication and advanced data analysis.
Initial Project
The first major task will be to design and integrate a microfluidics subsystem into our existing microscope prototype – to plan, test, order and add already commercially available components to a final prototype.
This includes selecting and integrating a commercial microfluidics system (e.g. Elveflow or similar), designing a custom sample chip holder and fluid interface, integrating control into an existing Python control software, and establishing practical operation and cleaning procedures.
The work is supported by a biochemistry team, but we are seeking for the right candidate who can make confident engineering decisions based on previous hands-on experiences connected to eg. microfluidics and laboratory automation.
Responsibilities
Mechanically integrate new devices into a prototype life-science instrument. The initial focus is on liquid sample handling, such as flow and temperature control.
Develop Python control and automation software, starting from existing vendor SDKs.
Design simple mechanical parts (CAD / 3D printing)
Hands-on prototyping and debugging in the lab
Method development for instrument performance evaluation and self-calibration.
Over time the role will involve increasing focus on automation and device control software.
Candidate Profile
For you to enjoy performing expected activities, and being a valuable member in an ambitious and innovative team; we think you are an engineer with a strong creative mindset and with strong previous experience building/developing scientific or laboratory instrumentation.
This role suits someone who enjoys experimental prototyping in a small startup environment. The candidate should be comfortable collaborating in a multidisciplinary research environment consisting of engineering, software, biochemistry and nanofabrication experts.
Relevant backgrounds and skills include:
Master of Science and/or Ph.D. educational background – ideally combined with a relevant Life Science focus.
Practical experience with microfluidics systems
Python programming for hardware control
Comfortable with hands-on lab engineering (CAD, electronics, prototyping)
Microscopy / Optics / Imaging
Lab automation / Liquid handling
Mechatronics / Robotics
A recent Ph.D. with strong hands-on instrument development experience could also be a good fit for this position.
