Information about the division

The https://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/me/research/materials-and-manufacture/ at the https://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/me/ (ME) conducts research and teaching in the areas of materials science and manufacturing technology. The activities range from materials design and coating development to additive manufacturing and the development of cutting processes. The work is mainly experimental and includes advanced microscopy and surface technology with links to theory. The division is responsible for the mechanical workshop and coordinates its experimental activities with the division of Computational Mechanics and Engineering Materials, whose activities in the Materials Manufacturing Lab are focused on mechanical testing and polymer processing. The two divisions share the need for advanced experimental support when it comes to computers and equipment.

Job description

As a research engineer, you will support Master's students, doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, and staff by providing operational and technical support for laboratory equipment and related systems. The role includes maintenance support for advanced research instruments, contact with suppliers and service organisations, purchasing consumables and electronic devices, and assisting with invoicing for external users. You will also contribute to ensuring compliance with applicable work environment legislation within your areas of responsibility.

Contract terms

Temporary employment, for a maximum period of one year.

Qualifications

As a research engineer, you will support the operation and maintenance of advanced characterization equipment. This includes troubleshooting technical issues and coordinating with suppliers' service organizations when needed. To qualify for the position, you should have:

  • a university degree, or equivalent qualifications, in a relevant technical field,
  • knowledge of electrics, electrical installations, or digital electronics,
  • the ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical problems,
  • good communication skills in both Swedish and English.

It is meritorious if you have:

  • knowledge of mechanics, compressed air systems, cooling systems, and gases,
  • experience from materials science or laboratory environments,
  • experience supporting computers and electronic devices.

As many issues arise unexpectedly, you enjoy solving technical challenges and supporting students and researchers in their daily work. The position offers a varied workday with a wide range of responsibilities.
